Accommodation

Shopping


The main shopping streets in the centre are Mannerheimintie, Aleksanterinkatu,

Kaisaniemenkatu, Pohjois (North) and Etelä (South) Esplanadi, Bulevardi

and Fredrikinkatu. Nearly all of the major malls, department stores and little

boutiques are within walking distance of each other.


The best-known department stores in the city centre are Stockmann, Sokos and

Aleksi13. Forum, Kluuvi, the Kiseleff Bazaar and the new Kämp Gallery are

the main malls.



Niightlife


You can party in Helsinki any evening of the week, but the most active nights

are Friday and Saturday. Many people in Helsinki go to clubs also on Wednesdays,

known as ‘Little Saturday’. The dress code for nightclubs is neat,

but no tie is required. The price of admission for clubs is usually around five

euros, although you can get into many clubs for free. Ticket prices for restaurants

and clubs with live music can be higher, and it will cost 1-2 euros to leave

your coat. A pint of beer or glass of wine costs around 4-5 euros, with stronger

drinks starting around six euros. Listed below are restaurants and clubs divided

Eating


Restaurants: Participating restaurants offer a special Helsinki Menu featuring

the very best Finnish ingredients and delicacies. This is a great way to try

local cuisine and often quite exotic dishes. The menu varies according to restaurant

and season.


Cafés: Finns drink more coffee per capita than any other nation in the

world, and cafés are an integral part of daily life in Helsinki. A broad

selection of cafés promises just the right atmosphere to suit your mood.


Bars and Nightclubs : The Helsinki night is filled with music, people and electricity.

The city has an active nightlife throughout the year, and there is a good mix

of styles to suit all tastes. Here are just a few examples of the bars and nightclubs

Public Transport


It is easy to get around Helsinki, whose public transportation system was rated

second best in Europe in 2003. With a single ticket you can hop aboard trams,

busses, the metro and even the ferry to Suomenlinna. Single tickets can be purchased

from the driver and from ticket machines.

Helsinki has to be seen and experienced to be fully appreciated, and there are
