Largest of the Ionian Islands, with Zante to the S, Lefkas to the N and Ithaca a few miles off its E coast. It is 16 mls wide by 30 mls long, with a couple of large peninsulas stretching N and W. The island's outstanding scenery includes pine forests, caves with subterranean lakes and one of Greece's highest mountains - Mount Aenos, at 5,000 ft. Most of the tourist resorts are clustered in the SW corner, on or near the coast. Many of these were rebuilt (some more attractively than others) after a 1953 earthquake destroyed much of the island. Visitors arrive at Kefalonia airport, SE of the capital, Argostoli. Ferries connect with Killini on the mainland, Corfu, Zante, Lefkas or Ithaca. More suitable for families and couples than the 18 to 30 crowd, Kefalonia is known for its blue sea and good beaches - most sandy, a few pebbly. The N and W coasts have quieter beaches, while the S is much more built-up.
