The largest resort on the island, Laganas is very popular with visitors from the UK. It's the only Club 18-30 resort on Zakynthos. The bright neon lights of Laganas are a magnet to young people, but the resort has a lot to offer everyone, with over 100 bars and a choice of Italian, Indian and Chinese food. Make sure you check the location of your accommodation. The resort is very spread out, with some apartments well over a mile from the beach. If you like an early night then make sure you're not above a bar or in one of the hotels on the main street in the centre of town. The area to the east of the town centre is the best place to stay. It can be almost peaceful, yet close to the beach and the town centre. The lack of water sports is a problem for some, but there are free buses running down to St Nickolaos beach everyday. It is definitely not traditionally Greek, but you don't have to travel far to be in traditional greek villages |
The most popular resort on the island owing to its fine beach and many amenities. About 1½ mls wide by 1½ mls long, this modern resort centres on 2 main roads which remain busy day and night, especially with young motorcyclists. Small fields, orchards and olive groves surround many of the properties, even quite close to the centre. |
| Suitability |
For the young and lively who want to dance the night away. Also for families who don't mind some noise from discos and bars. The centre of the resort is not for those who want a quiet or peaceful holiday. |
| Accommodation |
Self-catering studios in abundance and a variety of hotels, mainly in the lower categories, usually where life revolves around the bar. |
| Beach |
Laganas Bay has the best resort beach on the island. It is nearly 5 mls long, fairly narrow and with gently shelving, light tan sand. Plenty of beachside restaurants and snack bars. Motorised water sports are restricted because turtles use some parts of the bay for nesting. |
| Shopping |
Vast number of tourist shops, minimarkets and a couple of leather and gold shops - both are specialities of the island. |
| Entertainment |
Daytime: mainly beach activities; walk to Sarakina mansion ruins; horse riding; boat trip to see the turtles.
Nightlife: discos and numerous bars ranging from family orientated to cocktail and disco options; karaoke nights (in English, not Greek!); various tavernas run their own Greek nights. Very little live entertainment. |
| Eating |
Numerous restaurants from traditional Greek and Italian, to Chinese and Indian. Plenty of burger and kebab bars. Several British-style pubs. |
| Public
Transport |
Bus service 5 times a day to Zakynthos in high season. Taxis wait by the beach but after midnight they may be difficult to find. Horse-drawn carriages. |
| Excursions |
Full day: island tour visiting historic points of interest; Kefalonia boat trip to see the wreck of a smugglers' ship, with time for sunbathing; boat trip to Keri caves, with time for sunbathing; Olympia on the mainland to see where the Olympic games began. Two days: Athens. Evening: Greek night at another resort with a traditional Greek meal, dancers and singing. |
